• Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees are classified as “essential”, so they’re still working — but many are unpaid due to funding lapses. 
• Absenteeism is up and staffing shortages have been flagged. For example, air-traffic controller absences are significantly above normal. 
• The knock-on effect: longer security lines, more flight delays and cancellations. 
• Importantly: air travel is still safe — experts say safety standards remain intact despite the shutdown. 
What you should do if you’re flying soon:
• Arrive extra early at the airport — factor in more than usual for check-in and security.
• Have a backup plan: flight delays or re-routing could happen.
